2014 Ultimate Blog Party Post

In high school my Dad always called me, “Last Minute Liz.”  So, here I am, at the last minute writing a blog post that was due 45 minutes ago.  I’m not done procrastinating either.  I’m going to go fix myself a Mojito.  I have to find the scissors and a flashlight so I can harvest some fresh mint.

That took longer than expected because the recipe had to be modified when I realized I was out of limes.  I grabbed a grapefruit from the neighbor’s tree and invented a new mojito with grapefruit juice.  Yummy.  Now I’m ready.  Wait, where are my fuzzy writing socks?

I’m really excited to be participating in the 5 Minutes for Mom Blog Party again this year.  I’m relatively new to blogging, but I do understand that the idea is to reach people and build a community.  I spend a lot of time reading blog posts, so I’m looking forward to clicking a lot of links in the next week.

My blog is mostly about my current life as a single work at home mom to a 3 year old girl.  We’re snowbirds, so we spend summers in Beautiful British Columbia, and the rest of the year in Southern California.  How we got here is a long story that I am going to share at some point.

I’m also converting most of our favorite dishes to gluten free, so you’ll find some yummy GF recipes here.  My little one was suffering from inflammation in her joints, and eliminating gluten from her diet seems to have made it go away.  As an added bonus I stopped getting migraines, and I was having a 3 day migraine nearly every month.  Coincidence?  Perhaps, but do I want to start eating gluten again just to see if I can trigger a migraine?  Uh, nope.

If you’re going to click any links on this post, I hope it will be this one:  What Drowning Really Looks Like.  We are already in the pool every day and I want to make sure parents are aware of how quickly things can go pear shaped in the water.

Cheers!

  1. That's a crazy journey but at least it seems like it spans 20 years. I just went through a 2 year odyssey where we moved 4 times–once due to Hurricanes Irene and Lee. Love your teaser! Can't wait for the blog post or…e-book? for the story.

  2. I try with the healthy foods, it's always a bit of a struggle, but I make it a little easier by not buying typical kid food. If I wouldn't put it in my body, I wouldn't feed it to her. We're on a tight budget too, so I try not to waste much. We don't have a huge variety of food in the house, just what we need for the next few days.

  3. Nice meeting you Lizzie. What I want to be a snowbird. This past winter was too much.

  4. It was a recent trip to Florida that got her inspired to learn to swim. We were playing in the water at Juno Beach in February.

  5. Awesome thanks. I'm still working my way through the UBP14 links and I just clicked through to follow your facebook and instagram as well.

  6. Thank you! I found your blog and followed on bloglovin, also added you on G+. Great to meet you.

  7. Just to be consistent, it took me almost a week to reply to this comment. LOL I am overjoyed and overwhelmed to finally feel like I'm not just talking to myself!

  8. Thanks! I only post recipes that I have actually made successfully. This morning I made the gluten free banana bread again, but in a muffin tin. Sooo yummy!

  9. Totally kindred spirits! I'm now also guilty of procrastinating on following up on all of these comments. LOL, I'm overwhelmed and delighted by the conversations I'm having as a result of the UBP14.

  10. LOL – it's true though, there are times when the 10 second rule applies, and others when it doesn't, right? Like at the ducky park, I am so squeamish about duck poop, if food falls on the grass there I consider it biohazard. Blech. I also tell her not to drink bath water because it is bum soup.

  11. Reading this, I saw "Don't lick THAT trash can," like licking the other one would be okay. I'm a single mom of five boys. I guess the term "choose your battles" has sunk in too far when I automatically think. "Hey maybe THAT trash can is bad, but I'd let him get away with licking the other one." I once had higher standards… 😉
PS Stopping by from UBP14 and your blog title has been stuck in my mind for days! Yuck! 😉

  12. Hi Lizzie, I'm stopping in from #UBP14. The title of your blog has stuck with me since I first saw it a few days ago (but didn't have time to comment!) I am a single mom of 5 boys. I wish we ate better, but money and (even more precious) time often prevent us from doing so. Glad to see you're putting together healthy foods for your daughter. That's so important! I've been blogging for a few years but just started telling people about it about a month ago so, even though I've been around a while, it's all pretty new to me too! Welcome! 🙂

  13. Hi, I wanted to officially link up over here. I'm looking forward to looking at your GF recipes… My oldest has lots of food allergies. Thanks for the swimming video… here in Florida there is lots of water everywhere. We can never be too cautious. See ya around, Nermarí

  14. I'm here, following you via bloglovin now! Thanks for following on twitter and sending me a shoutout tweet. I'm always glad to meet new bloggers. Looking forward to connecting!

  15. Thank you! I can't say for sure if it was eliminating gluten that made such a difference for me, or if it was just a happy coincidence. I am delighted to be rid of the migraines though, and I don't want to test it by eating wheat again.

  16. We were in Trader Joe's recently and Ebi announced to the cashier that we were buying mint for Mommy's Mojitos!

  17. Hi Lizzie – I’m stopping by from #UBP14. Its nice to meet you. Great info on drowning!

  18. Wonderful post…I like your blog.^^

Let me know follow you then back.
    Lovely greets Nessa

  19. Last minute? You were way ahead of me. I just wrote mine. LOL! Great to meet you and thanks for reaching out via Twitter.

  20. Hi LIzzie! Stopping by via #UBP14. Your site is full of some great recipes that I will definitely be trying!

  21. Hi Lizzie – I'm here from the UBP and it's so lovely to meet you. I too want to hear more about your Snowbirs story. But right now I'm off to read your drowning post, we take the kiddos swimming every week and they are real water babes but I want to make sure I always keep them safe.
I hope you'll stop by my place for a visit too: https://justbrightideas.com/
    Enjoy the party!

  22. Hey Lizzie! Sounds like we are sort of kindred spirits. Procrastination is my middle name. I find it very interesting how eliminating gluten from your family's diet has had such a positive impact on your health as well as your daughter's. Food for thought.

Also, thanks for sharing the article on signs of drowning. Though it's scary to think about, the video and tips were helpful.

Thanks for stopping by the blog and hope you enjoy the rest of the Ultimate Blog Party 2014

  23. Boogers are yucky is one of those things I never thought I'd say. Kind of like, "Don't lick that trash can." I just followed you on Bloglovin, and I think I'm going to get involved in your blog hop, if I can stay awake long enough!

  24. Thanks for stopping in. I still don't have any limes, but I did poach some lemons from another neighbor.

  25. I did a strict wheat elimination diet – migraines and unusual allergy disappeared. Now I'm back to eating wheat and my body is not happy with it. Love your blog name!

  26. LOL. Completely enjoyed the opening paragraph. This is Itiel, returning the visit. And I looove Mojitos too, which why I created two products with the name.

  27. Hear hear on the boogers, because I spend most every day with at least one smeared somewhere on me. Your little girl is so cute! Visiting from the UBP14 and I am looking forward to coming back!

  28. I got here from Vancouver, BC via The Bahamas, Dubai, Mexico, Honduras, and Guatemala. A journey that began in 1992 with Hurricane Andrew. How's that for a teaser?

  29. I am here to return your Twitter luv; #the #UBP14 is such a wonderful way to meet new folks and yes, build our blogging community. I look forward to reading some of your gluten-free recipes, and do hope you found those limes. Cheers to you!!

  30. Ok, you got me! Now I am curious to hear the "long story" of your snowbird lifestyle… The looooooong winter here in Saskatchewan had me plotting a way to do the same.
