When you plan an adventure in the US, you should always consult with the state tourism site, as well as the site for the city you’re going to visit. I’ve compiled a list of US tourism websites as a resource.
The sites will often have a calendar of events and a digital guidebook you can download. Poking around these sites while putting together this list sent me into serious wanderlust!
When I start planning a trip with a destination in mind, I start with google and Pinterest searches, like “things to do in nameofcity” or “best activities in nameofcity. Search for the ‘top ten’ for your destination to ensure that you don’t miss any of the main attractions. I love reading first hand accounts by travel bloggers. I also love reading travel guidebooks like Lonely Planet and Rough Guide. TripAdvisor and Yelp are helpful for finding current reviews of hotels and restaurants. Another great resource is https://www.atlasobscura.com/.
Using all these resources, I start compiling a list of things I want to do on the trip and fit them into a calendar. That’s where the state and city tourism sites come in. It’s important to know if there are any big events going on, attraction closures, etc.
